Information

Who do I see:

The form of therapy I employ can help people with a range of concerns including: depression, anxiety and stress; trauma and abuse; addictions; identity and sexuality issues; relationship problems; as well as personality disorders. I work with adolescents and adults, individually or as couples. It is mostly longer term psychotherapy.

What to expect:

People come to therapy because they want help with a problem. If it's your first time you probably don't know what to expect or what happens in a therapy session. Or, if you've already had therapy or counselling, your expectations may be different to mine. Initially, I see clients for a few sessions - called an assessment period. At the end of these sessions I give you some feedback, and we have a discussion about the next step. This may mean a referral to another therapist if I believe I am unable to help you, or you may decide I am not right for you, or we may decide to enter an ongoing therapeutic relationship where we are both clear about our expectations.

Some problems can be resolved fairly quickly. Others may take a long time. In either case therapy is a collaborative effort, a relationship between therapist and client. The therapist seeks to help the client understand their problem and allow the development of a stronger sense of self. The client's problem is resolved through new learning and growth that brings relief from the distress that brought them into therapy.

What will it cost:

My current fee is $140 per session. I will negotiate a fee with clients who are financially disadvantaged. Some private health insurers give limited rebates for psychological services. The fees can be included in your tax-deductible medical expenses if you have a referral letter from a doctor. Under Medicare Provisions, some psychological conditions, when referred by a doctor, attract a rebate for 12 sessions each calendar year.
